When it comes to Mexico City, I’m by no means an expert but we have been twice in the last year and I’ve fallen madly in love with the city. There is art everywhere, the culture is international and young and vibrant. It gives me the same feeling that studying abroad gave me - a mash of people from all over just buzzing with life. More importantly than all of that, though, is the food. The food is unbeatable. Everywhere you turn. People love their craft here and it shows.
I urge you to plan your own trip there and if you’re walking around and loving the vibe of a neighborhood just explore and try random spots. You will be pleasantly surprised. For your planning, I’ve included some of our don’t miss favorites below.
And below that, I’ve got a fantastic green goddess dressing recipe for you. Inspired by the lush green of Mexico City, the spring sun and weather popping out up here in Seattle and of course - avocados. In theory, this recipe is a salad dressing but it’s really so much more than that. Use it as a sandwich spread, a veggie dip, a savory oatmeal topping or spread it on some toast. It’s thick and luscious making it perfect for as many applications as your brain can dream up.
And Now: Favorite Eats In Mexico City
Maizajo
This place is our number one. It’s so good you’ll find yourself going back here just for a quick taco. The upstairs is a formal sit down spot with a casual and comfortable vibe and the downstairs are mind blowing street tacos. Both are necessary to experience and have radically different menus. I also highly recommend getting some tortillas to take home in your suitcase. I could keep telling you how much I love it or you could watch this instead:
Molino El Pujol
We came here after an hour and a half in an uber and a failed attempt at taking Alden to a cool park outside the city. Spirits remained high but we were hot, bored & hungry. We sat outside in the gorgeous weather with a breeze and had the most incredible meal. Like Maizajo, the masa here is unmatched. Truly, get everything on the menu.
We also discovered later that it’s available on UberEats and we got breakfast delivered to our hotel room. Chilaquiles verde, Cafe De Olla Frio were don’t misses but honestly get everything. Bookmark this spot to save yourself from another room service on a tired morning in.

Panaderia Brulee
These are maybe my favorite croissants I’ve had outside of Paris. This teeny tiny bakeshop is so much more than that, though. I highly recommend showing up around 11, grabbing some fresh breads and sweet treats and sitting down on the sidewalk with a coffee. It’s a special place and absolutely a do not miss.
Tlecan
The vibe of this bar is quite possibly my favorite I’ve ever been to. But that’s not the reason to go here. The reason to visit is for a phenomenal mezcal experience. If you’re at all interested in mezcal - this is where you need to be.

El Vilsito
This is not the only spot to get proper Al Pastor Tacos but it sure is a phenomenal one. If that’s what you’re after - I highly recommend.
Chetito
A friend who has spent a lot of time in Mexico City for work took us to this spot and I’m so glad. Expect to wait as it’s clearly a local favorite but it’s worth it. We got a ton of tacos and each one was fantastic and extremely unique. I wish I had any photos to show you from this stop off but we were having too much fun and too much good food to get a snap.
Below this paywall you’ll find my favorite “dressing” for the sunny season: green goddess. If ever there were a time to subscribe for a dressing - this is the time.
If you choose to be a paid subscriber to access, I thank you! Developing recipes (well) takes time and can be quite costly in ingredients. If you upgrade to a paid subscription, you will receive 2 recipes per month (minimally).
